When there is too much sugar in the bloodstream, it spills over into the urine where it can be detected in laboratory tests. In fact, the first laboratory test to detect sugar in the urine was developed in the 1840’s- more than 150 years ago. Before that, doctors relied on tasting urine for diagnosis… we should all be grateful for medical technology!

12 Ways To Heal Your Body With Honey

Everything just tastes better with a little bit of honey, doesn’t it? Not only does it taste good, but raw honey is packed with nutritional and therapeutic value. It has been used for centuries to treat countless ailments. Hippocrates himself wrote of this “liquid gold” and its medicinal effects.

The 14-Day Raw Honey Challenge

Raw honey is packed with amazing compounds like bee pollen, royal jelly and beeswax, not to mention vitamins, antioxidants and other powerful constituents that modern science is just beginning to decode.

To explore the many facets of honey, embark upon this 14-day challenge. Just make sure you’re stocked with raw honey and not processed commercial honey.

39 Ways To Use Honey

If you're still here then you don't need convincing as to how powerful the healing effects of honey can be. So I'll just help you out with even more tips on how I use it.

There are literally hundreds of ways to use honey — but in this report, I'll give you 39 of my favorite. I hope you give some of these a try. You will be amazed at what you find.

Now that we have the technology to detect the presence of sugar (glucose) in the urine and the blood, our understanding of the harmful effects of that glucose has come a long way.

In fact, sugar in the diet has become enemy #1 when it comes to avoiding chronic disease. That’s because the excessive consumption of sugar is strongly associated with the increased risk of chronic diseases, including diabetes, obesity, tooth decay, cardiovascular disease, and many cancers.

Despite the warnings and the well-known risks, sugar remains a staple in the American diet, and more than 50% of people still consume more than they should. Nevertheless, the science is clear...one of the best pieces of advice for losing weight, keeping it off, and improving your health across the board is:

Reduce Sugar In Your Diet

That advice is not just a matter of personal opinion, morals, values, or political preference. It’s backed up by nearly 20 years of my own clinical experience and knowledge, and supported by strong scientific evidence in medical literature.

But, the devil is in the details.

And that’s because...Not All Sugars Are Created Equal

Here’s a perfect example:  An apple and a Snickers bar both have a sweet taste because they each contain about 20 grams of sugar...but you don’t need a degree in nutrition to know which one is a healthier choice. Naturally occurring sugars, like the ones in apples, are metabolized differently than the added sugars used in the manufacturing of highly processed foods- like candy bars.

In fact, regular consumption of fruit (even with its relatively high sugar content) is strongly associated with better health. Regular consumption of candy bars...not so much.

Why Is Quitting Sugar So Hard?

Unfortunately, as anyone who has ever tried to cut out sugar will tell you...it’s not exactly easy. In fact, it’s nearly impossible. That’s because our love for sugar is primitive. You see, our distant ancestors developed a love for sweets as a matter of survival. Glucose is the preferred fuel for all of the cells in our bodies, so cravings for it could mean the difference between life and death.

Back in the days when humans were hunter-gatherers, finding concentrated sources of sugar out in nature was extremely difficult. So although our ancestors may have craved it (and depended on it for survival), sugar was very hard to get.

Now, in the era of modern food processing, sugar is everywhere! In fact, the average American is now consuming over 150 pounds of pure sugar per year...which is more than a hunter-gatherer would have consumed in their entire lifetime.

Natural vs. Refined Sugar

In order to understand the critical differences between natural and refined sugars, I’d like to offer a basic biochemistry lesson:

Sugar is a generic term that refers to the fundamental building blocks of carbohydrate molecules. Sugar molecules are present in nature in two main forms:

HONEY

Why is honey different than all of the other “natural” and synthetic sugars on the list above?

Well, first of all...honey is the only natural “whole food” sweetener that we can use without any processing whatsoever. The honey in the beehive is “ready to eat” because the bees already did all of the work for us!

I wrote Honey Healing Kitchen for people like you. People who want to reduce the sugar in their diet (and their bloodstream), lose a few pounds, have more energy, have less inflammation, and better numbers on their next physical.  But, they want to get there without sacrificing taste!

This book has been called “the perfect compromise” because it is loaded with real, whole-food recipes that are nutritious, delicious, and easy to make and modify to your own preferences. And every one of them is honey-infused!

Hearty meals like:

How To Lose Weight, Lower Your Blood Pressure & Feel Better Instantly By Replacing Sugar With THIS Natural Sweetener

Monosaccharides: These are “simple” sugars and include glucose, fructose, and galactose and are both structural components of cells and cellular fuel.

Disaccharides: These are more “complex” combinations of simple sugars including sucrose (aka table sugar which is a combination of  glucose+fructose.

Table sugar
Powdered sugar
Pearl sugar
Light brown sugar
Dark brown sugar
Molasses
Turbinado sugar

Muscovado sugar
Coconut crystals
Corn syrup
High fructose corn syrup
Maple syrup
Agave nectar
And dozens more!

The centuries-old human love affair with sugar has led to all sorts of creative extractions, refinements, and modifications to these carbohydrates...many of which are now a major part of many of the processed foods that so many people eat every day.

Just look at this “short list” of the most commonly used types of refined sugars...which are all products of human ingenuity.  In other words, none of these familiar products exist in nature without human intervention.

The list above includes many products that originate in plants, but require extraction, refinement, or processing before they can be used in food or drink. There are dozens more synthetic sweeteners like saccharin (Sweet ‘N Low®), aspartame (Equal®), and sucralose (Splenda®) that are made in the laboratory.

I urge you to take another look at that list of sweeteners above and see if you notice anything missing.

There is ONLY ONE natural sweetener that exists in nature in its pure, unadulterated, and unprocessed form. Here’s a hint…in nature, you run the risk of getting stung if you try to get some.

Of course, I’m talking about Winnie the Pooh’s favorite treat, a gift from the bees, the “liquid gold” that we all know as...

The fact that honey is the only unprocessed whole food sweetener gives it a number of distinct advantages:

Honey is nutritious: It contains bioactive plant molecules and enzymes present in the nectar of the flowers and from the bees who made it.

Honey is rich in antioxidants: Phenolics, bioflavonoids and other organic acids in honey have been shown to increase blood antioxidant levels.

Honey is antimicrobial: Hundreds of scientific papers have demonstrated the power of honey against a wide range of both common and serious infections.

Honey improves cholesterol: A number of studies have shown reductions in bad cholesterol and triglycerides with the consumption of honey.

Honey is cough syrup:  Several studies (and centuries of human experience) point to honey as a safe and effective cough medicine.

Honey is versatile:  Whether it’s in the kitchen or the medicine cabinet...honey has a wide variety of uses.

Honey is sweeter than sugar: Which means you can use less.

Honey has a low glycemic index:  Compared to other sweeteners, honey has a relatively low glycemic index and has even been shown to help improve blood sugar control.

For all of those reasons, and for its delicious flavor…

Honey is the sweetener of choice

Now, before we get too far along...I think I owe you an introduction:

My name is Dr. Joshua Levitt. I’m a naturopathic physician and I own and run one of the largest holistic medicine practices in Connecticut.  I’m also a backyard beekeeper and the author of a popular book about the medicinal benefits of honey… which is why “liquid gold” is always on my mind.

In my medical practice, I see the ravages of excessive consumption of refined sugars found in processed foods every day. Refined sugar plays a significant role in the plague of modern-day chronic disease including obesity, cardiovascular disease, Alzheimer’s, diabetes and many cancers.

I routinely advise my patients to minimize their consumption of sugar and simple carbohydrates as a strategy for both the treatment and prevention of disease.  But I also live in the real world...and I know that my patients do too.

I know that they can’t or won’t avoid sugar entirely forever...and I wouldn't want to either!  That’s where honey comes in. Honey is a minimally processed whole food that doubles as a bona fide medicine for a wide range of different medical problems and conditions. In conjunction with a minimally processed plant-based diet, I consider honey the sweetener of choice.

Honey can be safely included in many recipes as a nutritious and delicious sugar substitute. One of the easiest places to start is to simply add a teaspoon of honey into your morning coffee. You’ll quickly come to love that rich sweet taste...and you can feel good about it too!

There are hundreds of ways to include honey in cooking and baking that infuse a bit of that liquid gold into your daily diet. You just need a road map!

That’s exactly why I created:

Honey Glazed Roasted Vegetable Salad (Page 42)
Coconut Honey Chickpea Curry (Page 32)
Honey ‘N Lime Fish Tacos (Page 44)

Sweet and savory snacks including:

Honey-Nut Granola (Page 12)

Just imagine feeling the effects of reducing the refined sugar in your diet. You’ll feel full, but not heavy after eating. You won’t have that jittery, over-sugared feeling anymore.
