One hundred pounds of tomatoes from just 100 square feet. Twenty pounds of carrots from 24 square feet. Delicious vegetables from a 3-by-4-foot plot. A fresh mesclun and herb salad snipped directly from a windowsill!

If you’re anything like me, this is very exciting news! Small gardens have seen big growth in recent years. From rooftop gardens to urban homesteads, people are taking back the control of their food supply by planting vegetable gardens in front yards, backyards, patios and anywhere else they have a little space – even kitchen counters.

Believe it or not, it's totally possible to grow your own vegetable garden even in a limited space. Through creative gardening techniques, people are growing enough food in a small vegetable garden to sustain their families, producing high yields in small spaces. Some even have enough left over to sell and generate an income. All that's required is some patience and smart tactics to get the most out of your garden space.

If you’re excited about starting your very own garden, but are feeling a bit stuck on how to get started, that’s where I come in.

A few things to consider when container gardening:

My hanging PVC pipe garden - it’s one of my favorite ways to grow food in limited space, and it looks amazing too

The planter boxes I made from shipping pallets  - what’s better than using free materials, and it adds architectural flair to my patio

How I turned a chair I found on the side of the road into a unique piece of garden art… and it’s a great home for my edible salad flowers!

Friends and neighbors are always super impressed with my garden creations, such as...

#1 Way To Start Gardening At Home (Even If You Don't Have A Ton Of Space)

Day Date

'Upcycling' can lead to some very interesting containers - you are limited only by your imagination and preferences.

Almost any plant will grow in a container if the container is big enough, just be sure the roots have enough space so the plant can grow comfortably.

Assess your sun exposure and plant accordingly to get the healthiest plants and most abundant harvest.

Be sure to provide enough water and food when gardening in containers, as soil in containers will dry out faster and nutrients tend to flush through them with greater speed than their in-ground counterparts.

For those of you who would like to grow food at home but have limited space, don't despair. Your dream of home-grown food is still within reach! You may not have the luxury of living on a farm or owning acreage, but that shouldn’t stop you from growing your own food.

If there's one thing I know about, it's trying to garden in small spaces. I lived for 10 years in a less-than-idea location: a north-facing condo on the 4th floor with a small balcony. I was still able to have a small harvest of tomatoes, herbs, cucumbers, zucchini, and even raspberries.

One of my favorite ways to produce loads of edibles but also make my food garden look amazing is to make unique and creative container projects.

Ultimately, almost anything can be turned into a container and I personally love the more unexpected options to bring some character into your garden. You don’t need to hide your food garden away in an ugly corner of the yard… Why not make it look amazing!

I could go on about creative edible gardening for hours… but if you’re interested in the topic, you’re probably excited to just get started already!

My name is Susan Patterson. I am a Master Gardener and the author of the top-selling book, The Backyard Harvest. I’ve been growing food to support my entire family (and the families of my family) for well over 20 years!

I believe that times are fragile and having access to a healthy, controlled, food source is more important than ever. I also know that growing your own food is one of the best and easiest ways to stay healthy and supercharge your immune system.

That’s why I’ve made it my personal mission to help as many people as possible to get “up and growing” with their very own garden, no matter where you live or what your budget looks like! With my wisdom in your pocket, you could be sitting down to enjoy a vibrant homegrown meal in just a few weeks.

There ARE advantages to growing in small spaces. Better soil control and pest control are two traditional garden headaches small-area gardeners can avoid. You get to avoid the trauma of waking up to find out a hungry rabbit made dinner of all your pea shoots!

Over the years, I became something of a small-space-garden connoisseur, and I'm sharing those tips with you today.

If you have limited outdoor space, be it a small yard, shared courtyard or balcony, a container garden with vegetables and fruits may be the ideal thing for you. I truly believe container gardening is the #1 way to grow food at home, even if you live in the city or have limited space.

One of the great things about container gardening is the ability to grow almost any vegetable and many varieties of fruit, given the right conditions and space enough for an appropriately-sized container.

With the right amount of sun exposure and watering system it's even possible to successfully grow small fruit trees or bushes this way. In my day I have seen both lemon trees and blueberry bushes thrive in above-ground planters - what a tasty way to fill your container garden with color!

Container gardens are also extremely space efficient as every ounce of soil in your container will count for fruit and vegetable production - no growing space will be wasted underfoot as you care for and harvest your plants.

Container gardening has the added benefit of being a great back-saver: they can be configured for those with reduced mobility, making certain that growing fresh fruit and vegetables at home is accessible to all. Putting the containers at the optimum height and positioning makes growing vegetables easier for young and old alike!

Yet another unique thing about container gardening is your ability as the gardener to chase the sun if necessary, as containers can be moved throughout the day. If you have no time to be moving containers whilst life carries on around you, no problem, plant for the amount of sun you have.

While it's true that many plants will demand a minimum of 6 hours of direct sun per day there are several 'shade vegetables' that will tolerate or thrive in partial shade and dappled sunlight.

If you’re inspired to do what I’ve done, and put food on the table from your own backyard…
