And research backs it up.

Like the February, 2000 article in the journal Atherosclerosis. Researchers in London published the results of a study showing inflammation contributed to the development of coronary heart disease (CHD).
 
In 2002, researchers at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston published a study in the journal Circulation linking chronic inflammation to atherosclerosis—a hardening of the arteries—which is a precursor to heart disease.
 
Shortly thereafter, in a large prospective study, researchers at the Harvard Medical School Center for Cardiovascular Disease Prevention indicted inflammation as the underlying cause of approximately 80% of all sudden cardiac deaths.
 
Again, in 2004, University of Texas researchers concluded a study linking inflammation to heart disease, saying “inflammation plays a critical role in CVD (cardio vascular disease), and the inflammatory cascade is particularly important in the atherosclerotic process.”
In study after study, inflammation is shown to be a key contributor in the development of heart disease.
 
Yet, despite research showing how dangerous it is to your heart health, it’s possible to reduce—even reverse—the damaging inflammatory effects in your body…naturally!

Cancer

Every year, cancer claims more than half a million American lives. It’s the second leading cause of death in the U.S., killing 1,602 people every single day!
 
Now, multiple studies in both animal and human models associate inflammation with the development of cancer. Here’s just one example…
In March, 2015, Florida researchers published the results of a new animal study in the Journal of Leukocyte Biology linking inflammation to increased tumor growth.
 
The team of researchers inserted breast cancer cells into two groups of rats. One group had a certain biomarker—a substance called CHI3L1—altered in their inflamed tissues.
 
Results showed that rats with less inflammation had slower tumor growth and less instances of metastasis than the control group.

Diabetes/Obesity

The CDC estimates more than 29 million Americans have diabetes. Another 86 million adults have pre-diabetes. But what’s even worse, 75,578 people die every year as a result of diabetes!
 
Not only is obesity known to be a major contributing factor in diabetes, but research now associates both diabetes and obesity with increased inflammation. 
 
Like the animal study Danish scientists recently published in the Journal of Leukocyte Biology.
The team of researchers showed that—during the very early stages of type 2 diabetes and compared to normal healthy mice—obese mice mobilized a larger number of white blood cells to invade the pancreatic tissue. For what purpose? To release pro-inflammatory cytokines—those small proteins that aid cell-to-cell communication during immune responses—that destroy insulin-producing beta cells.
 
Then, in a 2013 review article published in the International Journal of Endocrinology, Mexican researchers studied the role of chronic inflammation in obese individuals. They wrote…
In obesity, there are higher circulating concentrations of inflammatory cytokines than in lean beings, and it is believed they play a role in causing insulin resistance.”

Depression

Statistics show that more than 41,000 Americans commit suicide each year, and another 494,000 receive medical care for self-inflicted injuries. Suicide is a serious public health threat, and researchers continue to warn that having a history of depression is a major risk factor.
 
Now, a 2010 study published in Nature Reviews Neuroscience found a connection between inflammation and depression.
University of Illinois researchers were studying the effect inflammation had on people during extended periods of illness, such as systemic infections, cancer, or autoimmune diseases. They discovered the body’s natural inflammatory response actually signals the brain to cause sickness behaviors, like nausea, food avoidance, social disinterest, memory loss, and fragmented sleep.
 
And they wrote:

“These phenomena might account for the increased prevalence of clinical depression in physically ill people. Inflammation is therefore an important biological event that increases the risk of major depressive episodes, much like the more traditional psychosocial factors, such as the death of a loved one.”

Incredible! Who would have thought that inflammation and depression could be linked so closely?

Stroke

Every year, 795,000 people in the U.S. suffer a stroke—and 3 out of 4 are a first-time event. Plus, stroke is the fifth leading cause of death, killing nearly 130,000 people. That means one American dies from stroke every 4 minutes! 
 
And now, research links inflammation to the disease.
In 2002, scientists from the Netherlands published the results of The Leiden 85-Plus Study in the journal Stroke. They set out to test the hypothesis that inflammation predisposed the elderly to stroke.
 
In the study, they used levels of IL-10 and plasma concentration levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) as markers of inflammation. IL-10 is an anti-inflammatory cytokine—a signaling molecule that stimulates the movement of healing cells toward sites of inflammation. CRP is produced in the liver in higher concentrations when inflammation is present.
Here’s what they found…
 
Subjects with a history of stroke produced significantly lower levels of IL-10 and significantly higher concentrations of CRP than subjects without stroke. Prompting the study’s authors to write:

“These findings support the hypothesis that a pro-inflammatory response predisposes to stroke.”

For those suffering from chronic inflammation, that’s great news! Because when you lower inflammation, you lower your risk of stroke.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD)

In 2013, an estimated 5 million Americans aged 65 years or older had Alzheimer’s disease. It currently ranks as the sixth leading cause of death among adults in the U.S.—killing nearly 85,000 people—and continues to rise year after year!
 
Since the late 1980s, multiple studies hinted that chronic inflammation found in Alzheimer’s patients speeds up the disease process, and may even trigger it.
 
For example, Swedish researchers published the results of a 2002 study in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery & Psychiatry comparing inflammation markers in the spinal fluid of 56 patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) against 25 healthy controls of similar age.
They found that patients with MCI showed significantly higher levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines (cell signaling molecules that promote inflammation) and significantly lower levels of anti-inflammatory cytokines (cell signaling molecules that counteract inflammation).
 
The study’s authors concluded that patients with mild cognitive impairment are at greater risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease, and that “CNS (central nervous system) inflammation is an early hallmark in the pathogenesis of AD.”

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)

Estimates show more than 10% of adults in the U.S.—more than 20 million people—may have chronic kidney disease (CKD) of varying levels of seriousness.
 
Your chances of having CKD increases after age 50, and is most common among adults 70 years and older.
But that’s not the worst part. CKD is ranked the 9th leading cause of death in America, killing more than 47,000 people each year! And it has solid scientific ties to inflammation.
 
Consider this research from the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden…
 
In a 2002 review of articles on inflammation in end-stage renal disease, researchers state that…

“Available data suggest that pro-inflammatory cytokines play a central role in the genesis of both malnutrition and CVD (cardiovascular disease) in ESRD (end-stage renal disease). Thus it could be speculated that suppression of the vicious cycle of malnutrition, inflammation, and atherosclerosis (MIA syndrome) would improve survival in dialysis patients.”

And in a 2006 study published in the journal Kidney International, scientists suggest that the low-grade inflammation often observed in end stage renal disease can lead to sarcopenia (muscle wasting), which is a hallmark of patients with chronic kidney disease.

All told, chronic inflammation is responsible for 7 out of the top 10 leading causes of death in the United States! And hundreds of studies and scientific reviews now prove it.
